The bus drivers plying Awka to Onitsha went on protest today, though peacefully, against the extortion of their members by men of Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA).
They complain that the ARTMA staff are in the habit of extorting from the motorists for flimsy and varied offences that are out of traffic offence.
according to a protester, the ARTMA officials are in the habit of arresting and booking motorists in order to meet their targets.
again, in other cases, it is confirmed that the money which they collect from traffic offenders end up in their individual pockets.
while the state government is left with nothing, despite being paid from the government coffers.
The drivers association who matched to the Onitsha North Local Government Area Headquarters, where they were received by the Chairman, Hon. Tony Nworah to register their grievances.
The chairman addressed them to choose dialogue in resolving the crisis instead of taking the law into their hands.
The Chairman was able cool the tension and promise to look into the matter in order to bring a lasting solution.
